The Third Model African Union (AU) Assembly, organized by the Model AU Executive Committee (a student-led volunteer organization) and co-hosted by JICA, UNDP, and Sophia University, was held at Sophia University as part of Africa Weeks, a series of events organized by the university leading up to Africa Day on May 25.

This year, the event received a record-high 326 applications. Approximately 160 participants, including high school students, were selected to take part. Representing 42 African countries, participants (including, for the first time, individuals from Asia and Europe in addition to Japan and Africa) engaged in intensive discussions across three specialized committees. The assembly concluded with the adoption of three resolutions STC1STC2STC3.

<About Model African Union>

The Model AU is jointly organized by the student executive committee, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and Sophia University. Its objective is to provide students from Africa and Japan with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of African countries and engage in policy development.
The program simulates the AU Assembly, the decision-making body of the African Union. Approximately 160 participants, including high school students, represented 42 African countries and engaged in discussions from the perspective of their assigned countries. Participants came from diverse regions, including Japan, Africa, as well as Asia and Europe.
Discussions were conducted in three specialized committees:

Each team spent several months preparing position papers reflecting the perspectives of their assigned countries. A preparatory meeting was also held on May 16, one day before the assembly, to finalize discussions in each committee.
At the conclusion of the assembly, the proposals developed in each committee were adopted as official Model AU Resolutions, marking the closing of the event.
