Signing of Record of Discussions on Technical Cooperation Project with Bangladesh: Support for establishing essential technology for sustainable river management

On March 11, 2020, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions with the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in Dhaka for the Project for Planning Capacity Enhancement and Establishment of a Technology Adaptation Cycle on Comprehensive Nodi (River) Management (*), a technical cooperation project.

The project aims to provide support for establishing systematic river management methodologies applicable to various types of rivers in Bangladesh through obtaining practical knowledge and know-how on river management measures in accordance with the characteristics of the rivers, and developing comprehensive river management plans. The project sites are the Jamuna and Padma Rivers, known as world famous gigantic braided rivers, and medium and small sized flashy rivers in the southeast area of the country. The project will contribute to the achievement of SDGs Goals 1, 11 and 13.

(*) Known as “Nodi Project”. “Nodi” means “river” in Bengali.

Specific project details (provisional) Improving the skills of BWDB staff members through the following activities;
a) Development of knowledge tools for BWDB to select effective river training measures for efficient river management and applying them in the field.
b) Establishment of methodologies for developing comprehensive river management plans for each of the rivers and applying them in the field.
