Signing of Japanese ODA Loan Agreements with Indonesia: Supporting the construction of a large-scale wastewater treatment plant for Jakarta and efforts for flood disaster prevention measures

On March 31, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed loan agreements with the Government of the Republic of Indonesia in Jakarta, to provide Japanese ODA loans of up to a total of 64.36 billion yen for the following two projects.

(1) Jakarta Sewerage Development Project (Zone 1) (loan amount: 57.061 billion yen)
(2) Urban Flood Control System Improvement in Selected Cities (Phase 2) (loan amount: 7.299 billion yen)

Details for the projects are provided below.

(1) Jakarta Sewerage Development Project (Zone 1)

(a)Objective and Summary
This project involves constructing a large-scale wastewater treatment plant, along with a sewer network in Zone 1 of Jakarta, with the objectives of promoting proper wastewater treatment, improving the living environment and sanitation for residents, and conserving the aquatic environment. The project will contribute to the achievement of SDGs Goal 6.

(c) Planned Implementation Schedule
1. Completion of project: November 2025 – when the facilities are put into sevice.
2. Issuing of letters of invitation for supervising consulting services: April 2020.
3. Tender announcement of initial procurement package (Construction works) for international competitive bidding on project construction: Construction of WWTP, Construction of Sewers, expected release date: April 2020.

(2) Urban Flood Control System Improvement in Selected Cities (Phase 2)

(a)Objective and Summary
This project aims to improve the living environment and economic foundation of target areas that are highly prone to flood damage by supporting the construction of flood control infrastructure, enhancing the capacity of the river basin management offices and improving social consciousness.

This will support the reduction of risks related to floods in the target areas as well as enhance the capacity of flood risk management in the mid-term. The project will contribute to the achievement of SDGs Goals 9 and 11.
