On Oct. 14, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions with the Government of the Republic of Zambia for a clinical studies enhancement project for the School of Veterinary Medicine, at the University of Zambia (SVM-UNZA), a technical cooperation project.

About 60% of the working population in the Republic of Zambia engages in the agriculture sector, more than 70% of which have at least one or more kinds of livestock. Especially, small-scale farmers depend for 45% of their income on their livestock. However, outbreaks of various animal diseases (e.g. foot and mouth disease, African swine fever) and zoonosis can often be found in Zambia and the surrounding countries. These diseases affect farmer’s income and become a threat to human health.

In the 1980's, JICA provided a new building for the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Zambia through a grant aid, and then supported the establishment of an educational system in the undergraduate and the graduate courses through technical cooperation for over 10 years from 1985.

Also, SVM-UNZA has implemented some projects to improve its research capacity such as SATREPS (Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development) in collaboration with the School of Veterinary Medicine, Hokkaido University. This School has formed a strong partnership with the dispatch of researchers and the acceptance of trainees from SVM-UNZA for the last 30 years since its establishment. In the Clinical Studies Department at SVM-UNZA, however, most of the equipment is degraded and the educational system is at a low level compared with the other three departments. Therefore, further development of human resources is needed.

The project aims to formulate an improvement plan for lectures and practical classes and to strengthen teaching capacities of the staff in clinical studies for producing competent veterinarians doing early diagnosis and appropriate management of animal disease.
