Signing of the renewed Memorandum of Cooperation with the French Development Agency: Promoting collaboration on climate change countermeasures in the Indo-Pacific region and Africa

2023.04.25

On April 6, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) renewed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) with the French Development Agency (AFD: Agence Française de Développement Group) at JICA Headquarters in Tokyo. The original memorandum was signed at a Japan-France summit held in Tokyo in June 2019, and the renewal promises to further strengthen collaboration based on the achievements of the past four years.

Strong economic growth in the Indo-Pacific region and the evidence of significant potential in Africa come with an increasing need for actions against climate change and the development of quality infrastructure. This memorandum aims to facilitate a stronger partnership between the two agencies in order to contribute to deliver more effective development projects and to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through strengthening collaboration in climate change, disaster risk reduction, energy transition, sustainable urban development, private sector, and fragile areas.

The AFD is a French government organization that has a wealth of experience in providing support in Africa, as well as climate change and private sector engagement. The AFD is one of JICA’s closest allies among European development partners, and the signing of the renewed memorandum is expected to promote a stronger partnership and enable more effective development in the Indo-Pacific region and Africa, as well as a greater level of cooperation.
