Regarding infection of a JICA senior advisor with the COVID-19 new coronavirus

On March 13, it was confirmed that a JICA senior advisor has been infected with the COVID-19 new coronavirus while on assignment in Ethiopia.

This JICA senior advisor developed a fever on March 9 while in Ethiopia and was examined at a medical facility the next day, March 10. The test result was found to be positive on March 13. At present, the individual is in stable condition and staying at an isolation center in a designated hospital.

The individual is a male in his forties.

The individual departed Japan from Tokyo International Airport on Feb. 22. He arrived in Burkina Faso and stayed there until March 4. After entering Ethiopia on the same day, the individual engaged in research and other work.

To prevent the infection from spreading, JICA is cooperating with the Ethiopian authorities and others to determine where the patient has traveled and who he has been in close contact with. JICA will also implement counter measures to safeguard health and safety of those involved.
