Regarding infection of two JICA related persons stationed in Ethiopia with the COVID-19 new coronavirus

On March 15, it was confirmed that two JICA related persons working in Ethiopia have been infected with the COVID-19 new coronavirus.

One (a Japanese male in his forties) developed a fever on March 11, and following examination at a local medical facility was determined to be infected with the new coronavirus on March 15. At present, the individual is hospitalized in stable condition in a designated hospital. The other individual (also a Japanese male in his forties) is a JICA related person working in Ethiopia who was in close contact with the previously announced victim. Although asymptomatic, this individual was determined to be infected with the virus on March 15 following examination at a local medical facility.

To prevent the infection from spreading, JICA is cooperating with the Ethiopian authorities and other organizations to determine where the individual has traveled, and is temporarily closing the local office and asking people involved with JICA to self-isolate at home.

Subsequent to discovery of infection of the first individual who departed Japan for work in Ethiopia on Feb. 22, which was announced on the 14th, JICA's office has been temporarily closed and people who had close contact with the victim are self-isolating at home. JICA will follow directions of the Ethiopian authorities and cooperate with them to prevent the infection from spreading further.
