JICA supports Landslide Countermeasure Efforts in Ethiopia
2022.06.21
Landslides have long challenged the road sector in Ethiopia. To prevent future landslides, JICA has been supporting the Ethiopian government by training nationals in Japan and introducing various landslide countermeasure methods. In 2021, JICA trained 12 trainees from the Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) on general landslide mitigation methods, and an additional 13 trainees from ERA and 2 from Geospatial Information Institute on geospatial information utilization for landslide mitigation in 2022.
Landslide prevention is a relatively new concept to Ethiopia, and the risk of landslides remains in many parts of the country, especially at Abay Gorge. Therefore, JICA will continue to provide technical support on road asset management and landslide mitigation.
