JICA Advisor Provides Final Thoughts on 5S KAIZEN for Hospital Management

On August 16, Professor Handa, JICA’s advisor for improving the operations of hospitals through KAIZEN held a wrap-up session to share his final thoughts before leaving Ethiopia. JICA has been working with the Ministry of Health and three pilot hospitals¹ in Addis Ababa, as well as the Kaizen Excellence Center, to improve health care service using by 5S-KAIZEN. Prof.Handa explained how 5S-KAIZEN² can lead to improved patient safety and higher quality health care and emphasized it is essential to optimize resource allocation and strengthen the capacities of hospital management for sustaining government-run healthcare and providing hospital services appropriate to each level of the population.

JICA will continue to support 5S-KAIZEN activities at health facilities in cooperation with the Ministry of Health and KEC.

²5S is a slogan named after the acronym of each step of " Sort, Set, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain ". KAIZEN is implemented based on the positive mindset of employees fostered by 5S. KAIZEN works to improve the quality, safety, and productivity of health service through the implementation of KAIZEN activities in a process of gradually and continuously improving problems recognized by staff little by little under the leadership of the field. Eventually, we aim for TQM (Total Quality Management), or KAIZEN, to be implemented continuously and voluntarily so that the organization operates effectively and efficiently, optimizing its functions. Through these initiatives, we aim to strengthen the quality of health care and the overall health system.
