JICA Looks to Construct Secondary Schools in Sidama Region

A group of education experts from JICA headquarters, led by Mr. Mizuki Matsuzaki, signed a Memorandum of Discussions with Mr. Beyene Barasa, Vice President of Sidama Regional State, for the construction of secondary schools in the region.

In line with meeting SDG 4, providing quality education, the Government of Ethiopia and JICA are partnering together to improve access to upper secondary school education in Sidama Region. The new schools will ensure that gender equality is promoted within the education space by providing safe spaces for girls; these will contribute to improving the education of girls.

Furthermore, in Ethiopia, the quality of student’s education is of concern, with only 3.2% of students scoring 50% or more on the final exam for 12th graders for academic year of 2022/23. Therefore, in addition to building schools, JICA is also dispatching an Education Advisor to Sidama Region, who will work on improving the utilization of learning materials.
