JICA Malawi office received Outstanding Performance Award for the ex-post evaluation survey in 2024

JICA Malawi Office conducted ex-post evaluation survey for “Project for Development of Medium Scale Irrigation Schemes” (2011–2014: Phase 1) and “Project for Enhancing Capacity for Medium Scale Irrigation Scheme Development, Operation and Maintenance” (2015-2020: Phase 2) in 2024 and was commended for its excellent ex-post evaluation survey.

As a key point of our award, we were commended for our sincere approach to the ex-post evaluation as an opportunity to improve our business. The results of thorough information gathering, including confirmation of the current situation of the project site and interviews with relevant parties, led to specific recommendations for future improvements.
in order to improve the quality of the evaluation results in the pilot model of the irrigation scheme development, which was the project's objective, both projects’ targeted and non-targeted sites were surveyed across the country to ascertain the effectiveness of the national extension of the project and a report of the results was completed.

Normally, we would have hired local consultants to conduct the post-evaluation, but we challenged ourselves and conducted the exercise. The project was implemented in phases over a period of nine years and the task before us was enormous. We developed the survey questionnaire by ourselves and conducted the actual survey by visiting the project sites and the non-targeted sites throughout Malawi to evaluate the sustainability and results of the project.
This was a significant milestone for us since this was our first time to conduct ex-post evaluation. We have been able to put into practice what we learnt through the webinar. The experience gained through this ex-post evaluation will always be treasured and we are certain will be used in the future.
