JICA Volunteer Program

JICA volunteer program is one of Japan’s technical cooperation schemes operated as part of its Official Development Assistance (ODA). The program dispatches eager Japanese citizens who wish to participate in assisting developing countries and also have the calls for assistance from their governments.
The program has three objectives:
(1) To cooperate in the economic and social development, as well as the reconstruction of developing countries
(2) To deepen mutual understanding and coexistence in cross-cultural societies
(3) To give back the volunteer experience to society

JICA Volunteer in Palau

The JICA Volunteer program in Palau started in 1997. Over 350 volunteers have been dispatched to support a variety of fields, such as education, health care, public works, and sports etc. In particular, the dispatch of volunteers to the field of education has been one of the cores of the dispatch of volunteers in Palau. JICA volunteers are dispatched to all public elementary schools and high schools in Koror, Babeldaob, Peleliu and Angaur to teach subjects such as mathematics and Physical education. JICA volunteers are dispatched to a variety of public institutions, such as ministries, semi-government organizations, state governments, schools, hospitals, and NGOs. Some of the volunteers return to Palau after completing their assignment term, and JICA volunteers can be said that they play an important role in building strong bond between Japan and Palau, not only during but also after their dispatch.
