Grand opening ceremony for Nadzab Tomodachi International Airport, rename initiated by Prime Minister James Marape to symbolize the co-operation and friendship between the people of Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Japan, was held on October 2, 2023. In the ceremony, Hon. James Marape, Prime Minister of PNG, expressed his deep trust and gratitude for Japan. And Hon. Horii, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, mentioned that it will be the 50th anniversary of ODA for PNG in 2024 and emphasized the importance of deepening friendship between both countries.

Under the JICA’s loan project, the construction of terminal building, strengthening the existing runway, taxiways, and apron has been conducted, improving the air transport access, efficiency, and enhanced connectivity to global markets. Nadzab Tomodachi International Airport is expected to become a hub for both domestic and international travel, catalyzing economic growth to the country.

JICA will continue to contribute to the PNG’s development and the strengthening of bilateral relations for PNG and Japan.
