The Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA), National Capital District Commission (NCDC) and JICA held its first Joint Coordinating Committee (JCC) meeting for phase 3 of the Solid Waste Management project on 11 June 2024.

The Japan’s technical cooperation project for the “Promotion of Regional Initiative on Solid Waste Management in Pacific Island Countries (J-PRISM)” started in 2011 with phase two conducted from 2017 to 2023 and phase 3 to end in 2028. Phase 3 will focus on supporting the Urban Local Level Governments of Kokopo, Lae, Goroka and Alotau to implement their waste management plans and will also attempt to improve the capacity of the recyclers’ association.

During this JCC meeting, representatives from CEPA and NCDC reminded stakeholders of the importance of information sharing and working together to ensure that all project outcomes are achieved. Mr. Ravu Frank, the NCD City Manager also acknowledged JICA for its continued support through staff training in Japan. In return, JICA PNG Chief Representative, Mr. Matsuoka Hideaki assured NCDC of JICA’s continued support towards improving waste management and advocacy on the 3R+Return concept in PNG.
