The workshop on water supply for Pacific Island Countries (PICs) was held on the 10th and 11th February 2025 at Lamana Hotel, Port Moresby. The workshop was organized by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) and co-organized by Water PNG to discuss with the participants about the challenges and solutions related to the water business in PICs, introducing advanced Japanese technologies, networking, and visiting the water treatment plant in Port Moresby.

1st day of workshop

On the 10th of February, the participants from PICs were from PNG, Marshall Island, Cook Islands, and Kingdom of Tonga gave their presentations on each countries’ government initiatives, policies, challenges, and suggestions of business opportunities. Eight Japanese private companies presented their water related products and services to seek the solutions and potential business opportunities in PICs.

On the 11th of February, development partners including Asian Development Bank (ADB), Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), European Union (EU), Water Aid PNG, and JICA PNG Office also gave presentations to introduce their grant, loan support/projects in PNG/other regions. From JICA PNG Office, Mr MATSUOKA Hideaki, Chief Representative, introduced JICA’s projects focusing on water and sewage sectors in PNG. He mentioned “Even though we refer to PICs simply as "island countries", they encompass a wide variety of environments, from mountainous regions to coastal areas. Depending on their specific environments, each island country needs to seek its own solutions using the network built in this workshop”.
