On April 4, 2025, a Teacher Training Workshop was held at Popondetta Primary School in Oro Province, focusing on the effective use of the National Mathematics Textbook. Approximately 30 Primary School Teachers participated in the training. The session was led by Mr. Suzuki, a JICA Volunteer currently assigned to the school. The purpose of the training was to share practical strategies for utilizing the National Textbooks—developed with JICA’s support—with fellow teachers.

Why Is Teacher Training Needed Now? — Challenges in Utilizing the Textbooks
In recent years, National Textbooks for Mathematics and Science have been distributed to Primary Schools across Oro Province. However, many teachers have struggled to use these resources effectively. One of the underlying reasons is that many educators are accustomed to Outcome-Based Education (OBE) which had been practiced until recently, and are not familiar with new approaches to textbook use. This training session was designed to address such challenges by offering concrete and practical solutions.

From “Teaching” to “Reaching” — Training Content and Practical Approaches
The workshop was conducted in a lecture format, led by Mr. Suzuki. He shared practical insights on how to use the Mathematics Textbook and Teachers’ Guide, structure effective lessons, utilize visual teaching aids, and support students facing learning difficulties. The presentation included real examples and lessons learned from classroom experience, which left a strong impression on participants.

Changing Teacher Perspectives, Transforming Classroom Practice — Participant Feedback
Younger teachers showed a clear understanding of the benefits of the textbooks and actively engaged with the content. Meanwhile, more experienced teachers recognized the importance of using visual aids and preparing lessons in advance. One Head Teacher remarked, “No matter how good a textbook is, just having students read it or copy the board is not education.” This comment reflected a broader awareness among teachers about the need for more interactive and student-centered instruction.

Sustaining and Expanding Learning — Future Plans
The training had been postponed several times due to safety concerns in Popondetta Town, but was finally conducted successfully. Moving forward, the school plans to conduct similar training sessions on a term basis. In addition to Mathematics, the sessions will expand to include Science, Environmental Education, and other subjects. The team also envisions organizing district-wide workshops and subject-based teacher groups in the future.

Witnessing the Will to Improve — Reflections from the JICA Volunteer
Over 80% of the Popondetta school’s teachers participated in the training, demonstrating strong motivation and attentiveness. The fact that many local teachers are recognizing the true value of the textbooks and trying to incorporate them into their teaching shows clear progress. Mr. Suzuki hopes to support further knowledge-sharing by facilitating open demonstration classes led by local teachers.
