Papua New Guinea has taken a major step toward improving transparency and accountability in its extractive sector with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the 3rd Joint Coordinating Committee (JCC) Meeting for the Project on Improving Resource Related Revenue Management – Phase 2.

The MoU, signed by the Executive Director of the PNGEITI National Secretariat and the Auditor General, formalizes the Agreed-Upon Procedures (AUP) Engagement for EITI Reporting for the fiscal year 2024. This agreement is expected to strengthen financial auditing processes and ensure compliance with the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) standards.

The hybrid meeting held on 28 November 2025, reviewed PNGEITI reporting progress, AUP institutionalization and digital platform development, shared lessons from the Philippines EITI visit, and addressed outstanding issues to strengthen transparency and collaboration.

The Auditor General expressed, "This MoU represents a critical step in strengthening our auditing framework and ensuring that resource revenues are managed with the highest level of transparency. By aligning with EITI standards, we are reinforcing public trust and promoting accountability across the extractive sector. “

This initiative underscores PNG’s commitment to good governance and sustainable resource management, ensuring that revenues from the extractive sector are managed transparently for the benefit of all citizens.
