Making Mathematics Lessons More Engaging and Effective　‐JICA Volunteers Facilitate Teacher Training Workshop in Popondetta‐

In June 2026, a mathematics education workshop for primary school teachers was held in Popondetta, Oro Province. A total of 29 teachers participated, including 21 teachers from Popondetta Primary School and 8 teachers from the nearby Bethel Primary School and Crusade Primary School.

The workshop was planned and facilitated by JICA Volunteers working in primary schools across Papua New Guinea. Its objective was to share effective ways of using mathematics textbooks and teaching strategies that support students' understanding, while also providing an opportunity for teachers to learn from one another's classroom experiences.

On the first day, participants took part in a lesson study activity, a professional development approach widely practiced in Japan. Teachers observed a mathematics lesson conducted by a teacher from Popondetta Primary School and then discussed the lesson in groups, sharing its strengths as well as areas for improvement. The discussions were lively and constructive, with participants exchanging ideas and perspectives on effective teaching practices. The session provided a valuable opportunity for teachers to reflect on classroom instruction and learn collaboratively from their peers.

On the second day, JICA Volunteers conducted presentations and demonstration lessons.

Teachers who attended the workshop expressed positive feedback, noting that they gained a better understanding of how to use the textbooks effectively and were eager to apply the new ideas in their own lessons. Many participants showed particular interest in teaching approaches that support step-by-step student learning and in the creation of low-cost learning materials using locally available resources.

The workshop served not only as a platform for learning new teaching techniques but also as an opportunity for teachers to openly exchange ideas and learn from one another.

JICA Volunteers will continue working together with local educators to strengthen the learning environment for children across Papua New Guinea and support improvements in the quality of education.
