Contributing to strengthened logistics infrastructure through landslide reduction on the Kokopo-Rabaul Trunk Road - Signing of Grant Agreement with Papua New Guinea

On September 18 2026, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement which total value is JPY4.18 billion (About PGK 115 million) with the Government of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea in the capital city Port Moresby, to provide grant aid for the Project for Landslide Risk Reduction on the Kokopo-Rabaul Coastal Trunk Road. The signatures were exchanged between Secretary Koney Samuel, Department of National Planning and Monitoring of Papu New Guinea and Chief Representative Shirouzu Kenichi of JICA Papua New Guinea Office.

The project will improve the reliability of road infrastructure and strengthen logistics capacity in Papua New Guinea through the implementation of landslide risk reduction measures along a priority section identified under an infrastructure development plan formulated with support from Japan. By ensuring more resilient and reliable transport connectivity, the project is expected to contribute to the country’s economic growth while advancing enhanced connectivity, a key priority of the Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) initiative.

Drawing on Japan’s knowledge and expertise in disaster risk reduction and landslide management, the project will also support Papua New Guinea’s efforts to address the increasing risks posed by climate change and natural disasters. Through these efforts, the project is expected to further strengthen the longstanding partnership between Japan and Papua New Guinea and contribute to the development of a resilient and sustainable infrastructure network across the Indo-Pacific region.
