Launching a New Project in Uzbekistan – Supporting Glycyrrhiza Cultivation and Processing for Regional Development

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) launched a new Technical Cooperation Project in collaboration with Yakuzemi Informative Education Center Co., Ltd., Kitasato University School of Pharmacy, Katahira & Engineers International, Japan Development Service Co., Ltd. and Research and Production Center for Growing and Processing Medical Plants under Forestry Agency of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

This three-year project titled “Project for Regional Industry Development through Transfer of Cultivation and Processing Technologies of Glycyrrhiza in Uzbekistan” aims to contribute to regional economic development by promoting sustainable cultivation and value-added processing of Glycyrrhiza, a plant known for its adaptability to arid and saline soil conditions, and with high potential for use in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.

The project focuses on supporting smallholder farmers and local stakeholders in Yakkabog District, Kashkadarya Region, by providing training in cultivation techniques, processing technologies, quality evaluation, and market access. In addition, the project will promote mutual understanding and cooperation between Japan and Uzbekistan through expert dispatches, local capacity development, and knowledge exchange.
JICA will continue to work in partnership with local communities, government agencies, and academic institutions to promote sustainable development and strengthen friendly ties between Japan and Uzbekistan.
