JICA Provides Technical Support to Leather Companies

The Ethiopia Industrial Promotion Project (Export Promotion) (Phase 2) aims to increase the export value of leather materials and products, and one of the project activities is to provide technical support to improve the quality of the products. The last Project News reported that six partner companies were selected, and online technical support for these partner companies started on June 30, 2021.

First, the project requested each company to prepare a concept board (a material that shows the concept of their product through sketches and images) and five design drawings as a preliminary task for the product development of the Ethiopian Highland Leather brand targeting European and US markets. Then, Japanese experts, Mr. Shunji Nagai and Mr. Takeaki Yamamura had an online meeting with each company to confirm the direction of the concept board and designs. As for the design, the main point to be checked was whether the characteristics of sheepskin could be utilized. Advice was also given on specifications and sewing techniques that are suitable for the proposed designs.

The first samples will be developed based on the discussion and sent to Japan by the end of July. In the next online meeting, Japanese experts will check the actual samples and give more detailed advice.
