A pelican was taken into custody.

On July 16, a young pelican was taken into custody in a farming village near Lake Ohrid in northern Albania, on the border with North Macedonia. The pelican had lost its ability to fly due to some kind of disease and had been separated from its parents. The pelican was transferred to the management office of Divjake-Karavasta National Park where there is only breeding area of Pelican in Albania. With the help of the park staff, the pelican recovered enough to interact with an adult male pelican named Johnny, who was taken into care at management office.

He is not able to fly at this moment, but we will continue to work on his recovery and see if he can be reintroduced to the pelican here or in Ohrid.

PhotoWhen he was first taken into custody, he couldn't even hold his head up, couldn't eat or even drink water on his own.

PhotoAfter a week, he was able to sit up and started to feed himself.

PhotoEven though young pelicans less than 1 year old, they are almost the same size as adult.
