Biodiversity Monitoring in Divjake Karavasta National Park

The monitoring activity using iNaturalist web tool, which the project launched in June 2021 as a focus on bio-diversity in Divjake-Karavasta, has since registered more than 35 observers and over 700 observation reports in the first two months June-July . So far, 345 species of plants and animals have been identified and useful data are generated for each species. By continuing to accumulate observation results, we hope to clarify the flora and fauna of the Divjake Karavasta National Park and contribute to the improvement and extending of the monitoring system by Ministry of Environment, Albania.

In particular, it is very important to monitor throughout the year.

iNaturalist is a participatory social networking site run by the California Academy of Sciences and the National Geographic Society, and is funded by donations from users and sales of related goods.

The basic function of iNaturalist is to collect information on the distribution of Biodiversity through user contributions, there is also a function that other users to assist in "species identification" based on submitted photos and recordings. The observation records that are guaranteed to be accurate as research-level records will be stored in the database of GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility). This will also be used for BIONNA, the database of the Albanian Ministry of Environment, which the project supports.

In addition, the communication function among users will encourage the participation of not only experts but also citizens, students, NGOs, etc., as it is expected to provide opportunity of environmental education and public awareness as well as monitoring.
