Pelican Census

The Divjake Karavasta National Park (DKNP) includes Karavasta Lagoon, a Ramsar wetland and a breeding ground for a wide variety of birds, including the endangered Dalmatian Pelican (NT-IUCN), flamingos and others. The National Park Management Office, in cooperation with national research institutes and NGOs, conducts an annual bird census in DKNP. The project also involves in this census to started a nesting survey of pelicans with their breeding season has started in February. In this survey, more than 40 nests were counted on Pelican Island, which is located in the Karavasta Lagoon, and it was confirmed that the number of nests is steadily increasing. The number of confirmed nests last year was 83 finally, and the census is scheduled to continue until the end of the breeding season in June.
