On the 23rd and 24th of November, 2011, Supervision and Coaching (S&C) training was provided to nursing supervisors in Tonga. Total number of participants was 21; all of whom were assigned supervisors at the primary and secondary health facilities and also some who were assigned supervisors at Vaiola Hospital (the tertiary health facility). The training was designed based on the S&C manual developed by the project team. The topics of the training were; 1) roles and functions of supervisors, 2) concept and mechanism of S&C, 3) effective and efficient supervision, 4) the coaching model and 5) coaching skills. The participants learned these contents through participatory methods such as group discussion and role play.

To maximize effectiveness of the training, the MOH invited two delegates from Fiji to be a part of the facilitating team. The Fijian delegation consisted of the Director of Nursing Services and the Divisional In-Service Training (IST) Coordinator for Cent-Eastern Division. They contributed to the training through sharing experiences in S&C in Fiji. They shared practical knowledge and experiences as well as lessons learned in actual operation of the NB-IST at the ground level. Tongan participants in the training were motivated to work as supervisors through encouraging presentations and proactive discussion with Fijian counterparts.
