SHASTO Project Supported a Workshop for Updating the NCD Training Manual for the Physicians in Primary Health Care

A workshop to update the NCD training manual for the physicians in the Primary Health Care (PHC) level was organized by the Non-Communicable Diseases Control Programme of MoHFW (NCDC) with support from the SHASTO project on the 8th June, 2021. The workshop was chaired by the Line Director of NCDC, Prof. Dr. Robed Amin, and was attended by 25 professors and experts who are well acquainted with NCD from medical universities and research institutions, etc. The purpose of the workshop was to update the existing NCD training manual for the physicians working at the PHC level with the latest evidence-based practices.

In the opening remarks, the Line Director welcomed all the participants and thanked them for physically attending the workshop in spite of the current COVID-19 pandemic situation. He said that the monitoring reports indicate that the doctors, after the training, are providing satisfactory services at the facility level. However, to further improve the knowledge and skills of the physicians working at the PHC level, the present manual needs to be updated based on the current evidence-based practices. Finally, he requested all the participants to contribute in updating the training manual based on their experiences and the latest evidences.

Dr. Abdul Alim, Assistant Director and Program Manager of NCDC provided a PowerPoint presentation on the outline and contents covered in the current training manual. In the open discussion, the participants discussed the existing training manual and the status of current training for doctors conducted at each institution, as well as the National Protocol for Management of Diabetes and Hypertension. Most of the participants informed that the previous manual was mainly focused on clinical issues, however these should be national guidelines that recommend not only clinical issues but also changes in individual lifestyles and consciousness and should be in line with their respective NCD programs. In addition to it, the importance of utilizing a unified training manual was also discussed. According to the discussion, the outline of module was reviewed and the five technical working groups of relevant experts were formed to work on specific topics.

For the finalization of the training manual, two more workshops have been planned to help move forward step-by-step, considering the COVID-19 situation.
