The first technical seminar

The first technical seminar of the project featuring forest monitoring was held on 29th June 2022. This seminar was organized in a hybrid manner in which in-person meetings were set up in Phnom Penh and Stung Treng and connected to online participants through ZOOM system so that more participants can join the event from inside and outside Cambodia. A number of participants from the central government agencies, Stung Treng provincial government agencies, international organizations and NGOs being involved in the sustainable natural resource management in Cambodia came on board in this seminar.

In this seminar, presentations were made from the project for introducing overall project components and activities, reporting on the result of forest inventory survey implemented in Stung Treng province to support the enhancement of National Forest Monitoring System (NFMS), as well as reporting the contents and progress of drone training being implemented for enhancing the forest monitoring capacity of central government and Stung Treng provincial government.

After these presentations, active discussions were held between all the participants for the future of National Forest Inventory (NFI) implementation: how, when, who to implement?, as well as for the future use of drone: which application should be prioritized?

Regarding NFI, the participants agreed that fully implemented with securing necessary budget and building capacity of actors; basically each 4 or 5 years, but could be flexibly; and not only the main government actors, Ministry of Environment and Forestry Administration, but also many stakeholders are welcomed to be join the implementation.

About the application of drone, the participants give priorities on monitoring of illegal activities, measuring of canopy, boundary demarcation and zoning, etc. as well as fauna and flora study.

The project will move forward with the project activities taking into consideration the various comments obtained from Q&A and discussion sessions, corroborating with wide range of partners participated in this seminar.
