Conduct of Village Profile Survey

In order to grasp and assess the current natural and socio-economic conditions of the project target villages, the JICA Project Team in partnership with NGOs based in Timor-Leste conducted Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) and a household interview survey in the following four target villages in February/March 2011.

Noru sub-watershed in Laclo River Basin

  • Suco Faturasa (Remexio Sub-district)
  • Suco Fadabloco (Remexio Sub-district)

Bemos sub-watershed in Comoro River Basin

  • Suco Talitu (Laulara Sub-district)
  • Suco Madabeno (Laulara Sub-district)

The main aim of PRA is to collect data and information on i) present land use, ii) major agricultural and forest products, iii) prevailing farming practices, iv) market outlets for major agricultural commodities, and v) past and current customary rules over land and natural resources in the village. Meanwhile, the household interview survey aimed to obtain the socio-economic data which could be used as baseline data in monitoring and evaluation of the Project. Local communities in the target villages carried out the following activities in PRA.

  1. Resource map of the village
  2. Transect walking
  3. Tend analysis
  4. Seasonal calendar
  5. Group discussion on shifting cultivation
  6. Group discussion on present land use
  7. Group discussion on natural resource use
  8. Institutional venn diagram
  9. Group discussion on traditional rules/norm

The same activities will be carried out in the remaining two villages (Suco Hautoho and Suco Tohumeta) in November 2011.
