Project Background

JICA has officially restarted its project to build up the capacity of teaching staffs in the faculty of engineering, UNTL. It was very unfortunate for both JICA and Timor-Leste to experience the Crisis in April, 2006. Although the project had been suspended for almost a year after the crisis, JICA has never changed its attitude to support the faculty.

The project is called Project of the Capacity Development of Teaching Staff in the Faculty of Engineering CADETES Project. The objective is to encourage the local talent in engineering field. It is expected that UNTL can turn out competent engineers as a national university and contribute to develop the country in the long run. In order to achieve the objective, the project includes dispatch of Japanese professors to the faculty of engineering, sending of teaching staffs for training to Japan, and handover of laboratory equipments.

Purpose

Project Purpose :Basic teaching capacity of teaching staff in the Faculty of Engineering, UNTL is improved through practical activities.

Overall goal: The quality of education in the Faculty of Engineering, UNTL is improved.

Outputs

  1. Teaching staff are able to prepare curriculum and syllabus in the field of engineering which are appropriate for Timor-Leste.
  2. Teaching staff acquire the sufficient knowledge on basic mathematics and physics, fundamental engineering subjects, and necessary skills for conducting experiments through practical and appropriate research activities.
  3. Teaching quality, methods and materials including equipment for lectures and experiments are improved under well-organized faculty management.

Project Activities

1-1To collect and analyze related information to understand the real needs in the field of engineering in Timor-Leste with reference of existing curriculum and syllabus by task force.
1-2To plan what engineering education of UNTL should aim for, according to the real needs.
1-3To revise curriculum and syllabus and review them for relevance to the real needs.
2-1To understand the actual level of teaching staff in terms of skills and knowledge in the field of engineering to determine the contents of training courses.
2-2To select participants of training courses and modify participant's lecture schedules.
2-3To train teaching staff on basic education and engineering education and physics at basic and advanced level.
2-4To train teaching staff on fundamental engineering subjects
2-5To train teaching staff on conducting experiments through practical activities.
2-6To monitor the achievement of teaching staff.
3-1-1To observe classes for the evaluation of the quality of teaching, teaching methods and the level of understanding of students.
3-1-2To set up standards of teaching methods.
3-1-3To train teaching staff on teaching methods in accordance with the standard
3-1-4To monitor and evaluate the teaching quality by all of teaching staff.
3-2-1To review the currently used reference books for lecture and job sheets for practice and to discuss and determine the contents of lecture notes and job sheets.
3-2-2To develop lecture notes and job sheets.
3-2-3To monitor effectiveness of newly developed lecture notes and job sheets.
3-3-1To review the current usage and maintenance of equipment for experiments.
3-3-2To train teaching staff how to appropriately use and maintain equipment for experiments through practical activities.
3-4-1To set up practical activities to level up teaching quality.
3-4-2To feedback the results to curriculum and syllabus.
