Joint seminar with Ministry of Infrastructure

Road construction and other infrastructural development are currently implemented all over the country, but the government of Timor Leste faces challenges due to insufficient number of engineers in civil engineering. As a center of engineering education in Timor Leste, the Faculty of Engineering strengthened the cooperation with the Ministry of Infrastructure. CADETES project also support this cooperation since the project takes practical-oriented education at the Faculty of Engineering.

On 20th June 2008, Ministry of Infrastructure organized a joint seminar with the Faculty of Engineering. At the beginning of the seminar, Secretary of State for public works made presentation on “recent activities and future plan of public works on development process in Timor Leste”. Mr. Lorenco Soares, one of the teaching staff of civil engineering department, also presented his research topic “Actual condition and characteristics of slope failure in Timor Leste”. After the coffee break, the chief adviser of CADETES project, Prof. Kazama pointed out the current situation and some solutions of slope failure occurred in Timor Leste. It was interesting in a sense that the Ministry and UNTL members discussed together from different point of view, one from practical aspect and the other from academic aspect. The project would like to further facilitate network between UNTL and related ministries and companies in Timor Leste.
