Results of water measurement activities were analyzed with a short term expert.

The Project for Strengthening Water Management Transfer Project (SWMT Project) implemented water measurement activities in this summer at the three pilot sites. Subsequently, the results of the activities were analyzed and evaluated with Dr. Hiroyuki Taruya, a Short Term Expert on analysis and evaluation of water distribution and finally explained to the counterparts (CPs).

Up to now, the SWMT Project was continuously implementing the water measurement activities in this summer season, following technical recommendations made by Dr. Taruya in his first dispatch of June, 2014. During his second dispatch to the SWMT Project from October 12 to 23, 2014, Dr. Taruya made recommendations to improve water distribution at the pilot sites, based on his analysis and evaluation of the water measurement results.

On October 22, a workshop was held in Cairo for stakeholders in the three pilot sites to explain them about the water measurement results. Based on the water measurement results and their analysis for each pilot site, it was generally observed that they had enough water for their agricultural activities in the whole area in summer, whereas unfair water distribution and garbage dumping caused water shortage in some areas. Especially, in Shubra Baloola where there is serious shortage of water at the downstream area, it was observed that there was excess water intake at the upstream area in the first few days after water distribution by rotation. On the occasion of this workshop, the project team could provide the basic information which is necessary to discuss concrete solutions for the water shortage.

From now on, the project team will not only implement a regional workshop to share information on the measurement results, but also hold deep discussions with all the stakeholders at each pilot site about how to effectively solve the water shortage so that the project can try the improved activities in the next summer.
