Second WUO Training was implemented.

The Project for Strengthening Water Management Transfer (SWMT Project) implemented the second Training for Branch Canal Water Users' Associations (BCWUAs) (WUO Training) in total of seven days during the period from August 16 to September 11, 2015.

In the second WUO Training, the SWMT Project covered seven training topics[1] which were mainly from the first WUO Training, since several participants could not pass those technical tests and therefore the training contents and methods needed to be reviewed in the second WUO Training.

Due to the reasons mentioned above, the trainers exerted efforts to make the contents as simple as possible, referring to results of the evaluation on the first WUO Training by the trainees.

During the training on Participation in Water Scheduling and Operation & Maintenance, Eng. Yutaka Inoue, a Japanese Project Expert on Strengthening Water Users' Organizations, explained about the project activities including water measurement, new trials on water distribution to solve the water shortage at the tail-end and Joint Repair Work in Shubra Baloola, and the trainees looked very interested in those contents.

It was then impressive that Mr. Hamded El Gazzar, Chairman of the Shubra Baloola BCWUA, who was actively involved in every field activity there, seriously answered several questions about those field activities given by the other trainees.

Moreover in the two field visits on Solution of Environmental Issues and Participation in Water Scheduling and O&M, information on the training contents were actively exchanged among trainees from the pilot sites and members of the advanced BCWUAs.

For instance, in the field visit on Participation in Water Scheduling and O&M for trainees of the Shubra Baloola BCWUA which has been recently provided a dredging machine by the Project, they were asking many questions on the training topics to members of the advanced BCWUA.

In another field visit on Solution of Environmental Issues for trainees of the Ebheet and Bisintaway, they actually visited and learned about a bio-gas project in which they had large interests for a long time.

In addition, Dr. Shuichi Matsushima, a Short-term Expert of JICA who was visiting Egypt for his second field activity from August 15 to September 11, technically supported the SWMT Project in implementing the second WUO Training, developing the training manual, and giving his technical advice on those matters to the CPs.

Mr. Gazzar says, "We have benefited a lot from the 2nd WUO training. What we are planning to do as a next step is to work on disseminating the knowledge we got to farmers of a wider scale in our area. Then, within the next summer season, we will practice rotation of crops, as we learned it in the training."

From now on, the project team will analyze results of the second WUO Training and continuously develop the training manual, referring to recommendations by Dr. Matsushima.
