Project has finally begun at the full scale!

The project has officially started on March 20, 2016 for three (3) years cooperation by JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency), which was the first arrival date of short-term experts. In June, two (2) long-term experts, namely expert on statistics / Quality Control, and Coordinator arrived to CAPMAS to carry out the activities of the project that will be continuing till March 2019 with CAPMAS as a counterpart organization.

Activities

The project focuses on improving the quality of statistical studies and surveys conducted by CAPMAS, which is the central agency for statistical activities in Egypt. The project activities include: training programs including country-focused training in Japan, seminars / workshops, and providing equipment (tablets for survey), targeting for young statisticians / junior officials of CAPMAS in order to acquire professional expertise effectively.

Outputs

The following three points are expected as outputs.

  1. Statistical planning, fieldwork and data processing are implemented effectively and with high quality using IT application.
  2. The capacity on sampling method is improved in quality.
  3. The post-enumeration survey for the Census 2016 is conducted properly in accordance with the international standards.

Project aims to achieve above three outputs in cooperation with a counterpart organization. Please refer to the outline of the project for further information.

Holding of "Kick-off Meeting"

Kick-off meeting was held on July 28, 2016 at CAPMAS with the presence of Mr. Abu Bakr El Gendy, President of CAPMAS, Mr. Shiro NAKASONE, Senior Representative of JICA Egypt Office and JICA officials, JICA experts and project team members from CAPMAS staff. President of CAPMAS explained an implementation schedule of population and housing Census 2016, and also expressed his gratitude towards JICA's Support. Mr. Nakasone referred to the significance of Japan's cooperation to improve statistical system. Then both parties confirmed the outline of the project based on the agreement in December 2015 and exchanged views about proceedings of the project.


The first Seminar by JICA long-term Expert at CAPMAS

Mr. Matsuo, JICA long-term expert on Statistics & Quality Control held the first Seminar for CAPMAS staff within the framework of the project's activities on October 9, 2016 at CAPMAS Headquarters. At the seminar, Mr. Matsuo delivered lecture on: 1) impression and proposal to statistical activities in Egypt, 2) Japanese experience on quality control – 2nd Master Plan concerning the Development of Official Statistics. There were actively questions and answers with 60 participants from departments of CAPMAS.
