Training course of collection management

PhotoTrainers practice a CO2 experiment

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) held a training course in the Grand Egyptian Museum-Conservation Center (GEM-CC) from 4th of December to 13th of December 2011. In cooperation with GEM-CC three experts came from Japan to complete this mission; Prof. Masatoshi Kubo, Research Center for Cultural Resources, Dr. Shingo Hidaka, The National Museum of Ethnology and Ms.Tomomi Wadaka from LLC Bunkasozokogei.

The training course started by a speech from Mr. Hussein Abdelbassir, General Supervisor of GEM. He expressed the importance of the GEM project in all over the world. He was so glad for attending the opening ceremony of this training course, as it was the first time for him, since his appointment to his current position on November 20, 2011.

In addition, Mr. Hideyuki Suzuki, Chief Advisor of JICA-GEM-CC Project, delivered a welcome speech to trainees and experts and wished a success in the course for all of them.

This training course is the first follow-up course after the training courses of collection management and IPM in Japan, held in September and October, 2011. These courses in Japan were given to the core members of collection management and insecticidal treatment at GEM-CC. They formulated action plans for their activities during the training in Japan. The course of this time is to follow up the implementation of the two action plans in GEM-CC.

Prof. Kubo started his lecture about "Sharing Cultural Resources among Museums, Visitors and Site and Information system at the National Museum of Ethnology (NME)". It was an important lecture about database as archeological database department staff, conservators and curators tried to reap its benefits. At the end of the lecture, it had a very enthusiastic discussion between the participants and the professor. Prof. Kubo emphasized on cooperation and sharing information among different departments because this is the only way to achieve our goals.

In addition, Dr. Hidaka gave a lecture about "Overview of Workshop on Storage Room Management"; the training aims to enhance the overall management of artifacts in GEM-CC. He stresses that discussion between trainees is the only way to learn deeply during the course.

On the fifth day of the training course, a practical part started by experiments of Carbon Dioxide CO2 fumigation and how to deal with artifacts without directly handle them in the storages.

At the end of this training, conservators, curators and ADD staff were all benefited from practice and discussions with the professors.
