Researchers from the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR) and EthioRice experts visited the Republic of the Union of Myanmar for technical exchange. The team led by Dr. Diriba Geleti, Deputy Director General of EIAR, visited the country from October 21 to 24 under the technical exchange program hosted by a JICA project in Myanmar entitled "Project for Improvement on Accessibility of Rice Certified Seed".
The program aims to learn from Myanmar's experiences on rice sector development, especially in the areas of policy development models, approaches, institutions and technologies that can be adapted for Ethiopia's mid- and long-term rice development and promotion policies and strategies. The team visited the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation (MOALI) of Myanmar, sites of the host project on rice variety development and quality seed production, seed producing farmers as well as private actors including rice millers and agricultural machinery providers, through which the team enthusiastically exchanged ideas and gained useful information for Ethiopia's rice development.
The team from Ethiopia includes Mrs. Shewaye Abera, Center Director of National Rice Research and Training Center (NRRTC), Mr. Kiyoshi Shiratori, Chief Advisor of EthioRice and Mr. Osamu Sato, Coordinator of EthioRice. The rice researchers from Ethiopia and Myanmar pleasantly agreed to continue cooperation in rice development of the two countries.
