Project for Functional Enhancement of the National Rice Research and Training Centre (Ethio-Rice)
Agriculture is the main stay of Ethiopian economy, contributing more than 40% share in the gross domestic product, GDP, and more than 80% of the population is engaged in agriculture.
With this potential though, the country's history is punctuated by food insecurity due to climatic variability and the poor performance of the agricultural sector.
Realizing this problem, the government has been implementing several strategies, and among the target commodities that have received due emphasis in promotion of agricultural production, rice is one which is considered as the "Millennium Crop" expected to contribute in ensuring food security in the country.
Cognizant of the stated importance of rice and existing potential for its production, a national steering committee and technical committee composed of experts from different institutes were established to promote research and development activities on rice in the country, and "National Rice Research and Development Strategy on Ethiopia (NRRDSE)" was developed in 2010.
Since rice is a recent introduction in Ethiopia, further assistance of technical cooperation is required to enhance the research and development activities. Accordingly, Government of Ethiopia requested Government of Japan for the technical cooperation to enhance rice research and development.
