Project Title

The Project for Development of Road Maintenance Capacity of Addis Ababa City (Technical Cooperation)

Project Background

Addis Ababa is growing into a metropolitan city characterized by rapid population growth (2.9 million population with estimated growth rate of 2.1% per annum) and spatial expansion (as of 2010 Addis Ababa city has an area of 527 square kilometer divided into ten sub-cities). Against a backdrop of steady economic growth in past several years, the city is getting more urbanized and motorized. Road network in the city is also growing but because of inadequate road maintenance, roads in the city are generally in bad condition and this is one of the causes for heavy traffic jam frequently seen in the city. Proper maintenance of city roads is getting more important than ever and it is urgently needed to develop the capacity of AACRA in road maintenance through establishment of the road maintenance cycle, formulation of road maintenance manual, structure of database and etc.

3. The maintenance skills and knowledge of AACRA technical staff are improved
