The total tilapia fingerling demand has increased by two-folds in the past 3 years (1 million in 2018 to 2 million in 2021) in Fiji, with the increase in the demand. However, the constraints on government resources, Naduruloulou Research Station (NRS) has not been able to supply sufficient number of fingerlings to farmers in a timely manner. Also, in the past 3 years production has been greatly affected due to flooding caused by Tropical Cyclones, and heavy rain associated with the cyclone season that is from November to April. Considering this situation, the aim of this project is to improve the Tilapia Hatchery Production System to ensure quality and timely supply of Tilapia fry to farmers to support sustainable aquaculture development in Fiji. And the main objectives are: i) to compare the incubator system, and the 2 hapa breeding systems by assessing, fry production, fingerling survival and growth rate. ii) to determine the most efficient and economical tilapia fingerling production protocol for NFR. iii) to provide guidelines and recommendations for hatchery operators in Fiji. JICA has started the procurement of the necessary items and renovation of pond.
