Project to Improve Math Textbooks and Conduct Teacher Training Begins

The Project for the Improvement of the Quality of Lower Secondary Mathematics Education" started on 1st of January, 2017 in Guatemala. This project will develop mathematics textbooks and teacher's guide and conduct training activities for mathematics teachers during the next two years and half.

Two Japanese members arrived in Guatemala on 9th of January and paid a courtesy call to the Ministry of Education and the University of San Carlos, which are the counterpart organizations of the project. Following the courtesy call, a series of kick-off meetings with the Guatemalan members were held to discuss on materials development policies, writing schedules and their specifications. The project team also visited a public lower secondary school to observe mathematics lessons. It seemed difficult to organize one class in 35 minutes, which is a lesson period in Guatemala, whereas teachers conduct 50 minute lessons in Japan.

From January 23rd to 27th, a Japanese Special Advisor, Mr. Kimura, conducted a workshop to review "Function" units of the first to third grade of the lower secondary school, and develop unit teaching plans with the Guatemalan members.

The project members will work as hard as possible to develop mathematics textbooks and teacher's guides as well as to improve training activities for teachers during the project.
