Working to develop contents for new mathematics textbooks

"Project for the Improvement of the Quality of Lower Secondary Mathematics Education in the Republic of Guatemala"

The project team is now preparing contents for the students' textbook in "Arithmetic", "Algebra" and "Functions" that are taught in the first semester in the lower secondary mathematics education in Guatemala.

The project team started reviewing the second draft of the "Functions" with Mr. Motoyama, mathematics education expert, who arrived in Guatemala on 23rd April. Since the "Functions" are considered as one of the most difficult units, it has rarely been taught in the lower secondary schools in Guatemala. Furthermore, the unit includes the concept of Relation, which is not included in the Japanese lower secondary education. Therefore, the team and the expert had to discuss a lot about how to prepare an appropriate sequence for the learning and how to explain the content for students to understand better and easier. At the same time, the project team is preparing the first draft of "Arithmetic" and "Algebra".

In the middle of May, the project team will visit a lower secondary school in Guatemala City to try out developed learning contents.
