Launch the Project for Formulation of Comprehensive Flood Control Master Plan in Urbanized River Basins in Chennai

Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, is the fourth most populous city in India with a population of approximately 7 million (the metropolitan area has a population of approximately 13 million), and the Chennai metropolitan area plays an important role in supporting the country's economy. On the other hand, the Chennai metropolitan area is vulnerable to natural disasters. Cyclones and heavy rains have caused floods in 1943, 1976, 1985, 1998, 2002, 2005, 2015, and 2021. The population of the Chennai metropolitan area keeps increasing, and the scale of damage is expected to increase in the future.

Considering this situation, JICA has decided to provide technical assistance for "Project for Formulation of Comprehensive Flood Control Master Plan in Urbanized River Basins in Chennai". The four main implementing agencies: TNDRRA, CMDA, TNWRD, and GCC, that are involved in flood control and urban planning, and related agencies, participated in a meeting and discussed the cooperative arrangements for the smooth implementation of the project.
