Forest fire control in collaboration with Sumitomo Forestry CO., Ltd.

A training and extension program for forest fire control was conducted in 2 locations in Bromo Tengger Semeru NP based on the agreement among the Bromo Tengger Semeru NP Office, JICA, Sumitomo Forestry Co., Ltd. And PT. Kutai Timber Indonesia. The target for this program was local communities. Date and locations of this program are as follows:

  1. Location: Wonokitri Rainger District
    Date: July 11-12, 2011
    Participants: 50 people from 5 villages
  2. Location: Ranu Pani Ranger District
    Date: July 11-12, 2011
    Participants: 41 people from 4 villages

The lecturers and instructors for above program the staff (4 people) of the Directorate of Forest Fire Control, PHKA (Sub-Director 1 person and section chief 3 people). The contents of the training and extension program during 2 days are almost the same in both locations as follows;

    • About Manggala Agni (Fire Brigade)
    • Importance of forest fire control
    • Government regulation on forest fire
    • Policy in Indonesia on forest fire and its control
    • The principle of forest fire
    • Forest fire prevention
    • Early detection of forest fire
    • Fire suppression equipment and suppressing methods
    • Suppressing method in peat swamp areas
  2. 2nd day (practice)
    • About fire suppression training
    • Fire suppression theory
    • Practice (Pomp, Backpack pomp, Hand tools)

The above training and extension program is indispensable in this NP where forest fires often occur due to the mistreatment of fires by tourists and local people. It has been determined that peoples' consciousness towards forest fire prevention and suppression were improved through this program.

Concerning the budget necessary for this program, the National Park Office prepared cars for lecturers, JICA provided travel expenses and honorarium for lecturers, Sumitomo Forestry Co., Ltd. provided transportation fee and honorarium for participants, lunch and snack, PT KTI prepared cars for transportation, based on the above agreement.

JICA's contribution was around 37.4 million Rupiah including travel expenses for JICA assistants, and the contribution from Sumitomo Forestry Co., Ltd. was around 33.6 million Rupiah.
