Internship Training in Jepara, Central Java: Ulos Fashion Industry in Samosir

From 25 November 2013, two Ulos producers (weavers) in Samosir participated in a two-week internship training held in Troso Village, Jepara District, Central Java Province (the interns were accommodated by the Women Entrepreneurs Association in Jepara District). Troso Village is one of the production centers of woven fabrics in Indonesia, where the producers use various types of loom to process a variety of motives/ designs of fabric products, responding to the diversity of market needs.

The internship training was implemented as suggested in the Local Industry Action Plan for Ulos Fashion Industry in Samosir prepared in the last October. The training aimed to enhance skills and knowledge of the weaver participants who are expected to play a leading role in the subsequent activities for fashion product development. The interns learned for weaving practices used for more advanced looms than those in Samosir, and practiced a pattern-drawing and weaving process for the Ulos motif fabric called as Harungguan, that has disappeared in Samosir. In addition, they intensively learned about yarn-processing skill, such as twisting, filature and dyeing, that weavers in Samosir do rarely practice.

Upon completing the program, the interns presented the results of this internship training in a meeting held by the Local Working Group for Ulos fashion industry. In particular, they underlined acquirement of the yarn-processing skills as one of the most useful outcome, expressing confidence in utilizing such skills for their own fabric production. They are now expected to become a leading figure in the subsequent activities for fashion product development.
