Ship Component Industry in Tegal, Central Java: 3S-activity and Comparison Study

3S-activity is under introduction to the ship component production cooperative members in Tegal District through providing technical guidance for "sorting things necessary and unnecessary in production process (Seiri)", "putting in order things such as raw material, semi-product, and tools used for processing (Seiton)" and "cleaning the workshop every day after work (Seisou)", so that these manners could be essential for them to further improve productivity. Based on the current pilot activity, the Project shall extend 3S to the rest of the cooperative members working together with the Shindan-shi (SME consultant) active in the local governments.

Meanwhile, a comparative study of ship component production was implemented in the end of November involving mainly the cooperative members under the coordination by the Local Working Group (LWG). The participants visited two major shipbuilding companies located in the harbor area of North Jakarta, where they were explained about the current situation of procurement as well as technical standard required for components, followed by question-and-answer regarding the possibility of the participants for starting transaction with the companies. The participants also visited BKI (Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia), only organization enacting and operating rules relating to safety of ships constructed in Indonesia, for learning the procedures on ship component inspection/ certification. BKI is providing technical guidance related to component quality improvement too in addition to inspection/ certification, then BKI showed willingness to provide technical guidance to the participants as needed. Findings obtained through this comparative study was reported on 21st November to the Director of Maritime, Aerospace and Defense Industry under the Directorate General of High-technology Based Leading Industry, Ministry of Industry (MoI), resulting in the Director's intention to encourage BKI in providing technical guidance to the cooperative members, understanding that it may contribute to the improvement of the local contents in ship building sector in Indonesia.
