Metalwork (Ship Parts) Industry in Tegal District: Progress of the challenge towards component certification

The ship parts industry of Tegal District has been quite active in obtaining the component certification by the Indonesian Classification Bureau (BKI) with the support of the Local Working Group (LWG), which is the Challenge Action for this industry. Having been guided by a local technical expert, target SMIs have already documented the workflow of their product manufacturing (quality manual) and the drawing (which satisfies the requirement of BKI) of the five target ship components (ship window, ship door, gate valve, jet nozzle and coupling/ hydrant valve machine). Based on these quality manuals/ drawings, they commenced the prototype-making of those target components since May 2014, and have already finished the preliminary tests of quality at a testing facility of Dinas Industry and Trade of Tegal in June 2014. And then, in mid-July 2014, four of the five components (except gate valve) will be brought to BKI for the final performance test (the gate valve will also be sent soon to BKI in late July). In parallel with above-stated supports and initiatives towards BKI's certification, a research on standardization of scrap-based casting materials has been undertaken since June 2014 in cooperation with Diponegoro University, one of the national universities located nearby.

The LWG, Dinas Industry and Trade of Tegal in particular, has taken the strong initiative in facilitating the implementation of the Local Industry Action Plan, securing the budget and matching supporting institutions for such support activities to target industry, and holding meetings voluntarily to monitor the support activities facilitated so far. The target SMIs of Tegal have been doggedly tackling the prototype-making and testing on a trial-&-error basis towards BKI certification, which is the first challenge to the local industries in Indonesia. After their successful acquisition of the certification, target SMIs are expected to take marketing action of the certified components to the shipbuilding industries. LWG will continue to facilitate the support to the market development activity.
