Ulos Fashion Industry in Samosir Regency: Revision of Local Industry Action Plan

PhotoLWG meeting with KUB Harungguan

More than a year has passed since the Local Industry Action Plan (LIAP) for the Ulos fashion industry in Samosir was formulated. The target producers have undergone changes in their issues and needs, while LIAP implementation has shown steady progress.

In December 2014, the Local Working Group (LWG) for the industry held a meeting, where progress in LIAP implementation and the current issues and needs of the target producers were reviewed. Representatives of the "KUB Harungguan," a newly established joint business group of Ulos-applied handicrafts, also took part in the meeting. LWG recognizes critical importance of strengthening this business group in achieving the objective of the LIAP.

In the meeting, the KUB Harungguan representatives presented their current issues and needs, to which each LWG member suggested suitable support activities. The support activities included those for the enhancement of their financial management skills, improvement in their financial access for working capital, augmentation of weavers who can produce their product materials (Ulos fabrics), and the development of promotion tools such as POP advertisements and a product catalog. As a result of the discussion, LWG revised the LIAP by incorporating these activities into it, thereby making it more suitable for the current situation of the Ulos fashion industry in Samosir.

The remaining implementation period of the LIAP is no more than a year now. It is highly expected that the revised LIAP will contribute largely to both accelerating the achievement of the LIAP's objective and further heightening its achievement level.
