Ship-component industry in Tegal Regency: Official Certification for Ship-components

Since the end of 2013 the Local Working Group (LWG) for ship-component industry in Tegal Regency in cooperation with the target SMIs has challenged for official certification of ship-components by Indonesian Classification Bureau (BKI), and has finally been certified for 3 components (ship door, window, etc.) at the end of March 2015, presenting the first case of BKI certification by the local SMIs in Indonesia. Having been proposing and facilitating the supports by the Ministry of Industry (MoI), Provincial Dinas Industry & Trade and BKI, the LWG and target SMIs have together worked out for drawing, prototyping and testing of the to-be-certified components and has already achieved the part of the challenge action.

It is however noted that not all challenged components has been certified yet, leaving a few uncertified components such as gate-valves. BKI has been indicating a few minor improvements against these prototypes, the target SMIs are still working for such improvements in order to receive certification as earlier as possible. For the fiscal year of 2015, the additional 5 components have been already suggested for BKI certification, while securing budget for the necessary supports. Furthermore, marketing support to promote the certified component to the ship-building industries has been also scheduled.

Although the number of certified components is still deemed small, the MoI is currently considering the application of the Tegal's challenge for ship-component certification to other regions of ship-component production, by strengthening the collaboration with BKI and packaging the support activities facilitated so far in Tegal. The MoI is planning to shortly hold the workshop among the concerned stakeholders for reviewing the challenge made and issues observed in Tegal.
