JICA supported Badan POM to produce a documentary film to raise awareness of food safety in village communities.

Badan POM has responsibility to intervene industry and other community for awareness and education on food safety. Supporting village communities is one of the priorities to ensure rural food safety.

"Food Safety for Village Community" is a community empowerment program that aims to help village communities become self-reliant and support government action to fulfil safe food needs and prevent stunting. The program involves village heads and their officials, local community, schools and the private sector. With technical assistance from Badan POM and Balai Besar POM, villagers are helped to secure safe food.

The documentary film selects a model rural village in Yogyakarta as the best village 2020 of the "Food Safety for Village Community" Program at national level, to deliver the keys to the success of the Program. It presents the daily practices toward safe food in families, school youth, and food enterprises, especially small and medium enterprises - household industries, retailers, shops, food street vendors, plant and rice farmers, etc. Filming for this documentary, which began late last year, has now been completed. To ensure that the video material conveys the right message, the technical team of the Directorate of Community and Processed Food Enterprises Empowerment (PMPUPO) of Badan POM worked with experts from the Faculty of Art and Design of the Bandung Institute of Technology. The final documentary film will be released by Badan POM shortly.

The visual information will be accessible and feasible for villagers to gain the food safety knowledge they need. It is also hoped that the documentary film will encourage other villages in Indonesia and villagers with different levels of knowledge, skills and qualifications in food safety management to take similar initiatives on food safety in their own communities.
