Visit to Jember

From 2nd to 3rd of August, Ms. Kanako Hiraoka, Project Formulation Advisor, Toshiyasu Ueno, Expert, and Shusaku Shiiba, Expertt have visited Jember District, the model area of the Project, to have a conference with the counterparts concerned as well as to investigate the current state of the Project Site.

In the meeting with Mr. Urip, Assistant Official to the Vice Head of Jember District; who is the general contact person of the project activity and the operating officer of SATLAK; we exchanged views with him on the disaster information monitoring system and the technique for a practice utilizing the said system. With Mr. Sandi, General Manager of the Red Cross in Jember District, we discussed on the educational activity in the future. Besides that, we heard on the communication system of the disaster information, etc. from Mr. Hudori, Head of Sukorambi Sub-District, where there is Jompo River, the Project Site.

In the catchment area of the Jompo River, we confirmed the working condition of the observation rain gage, which was installed in March this year; we also heard a presentation on the state of collection of data from Mr. Agus, Manager of the Plantation Office. In addition, we confirmed the places where the water level gages will be installed, and investigated the state of the area around the slope of the upstream of the river, where we have been monitoring its behavior on the landslide.

By this visit to Jember District, we saw it in a fresh light how big an expectation from the local community to this Project is. Based on the performance in Jember District, we will work in the concrete manner on enhancement of the capability for Banjir Bandang disaster mitigation of Ministry of Public Works and local organization concerned in the main hazardous area.
