Short-term experts conducted Sabo investigations at Mt. Merapi Volcano area

On October 19th, Short-term experts who visited Indonesia conducted Sabo investigations at Mt. Merapi Volcano area which locates at about 30 Km north of Jogjakarta city.

At the area, Urgent Disaster Reduction Project for Mt. Merapi/Progo River Basin project, JICA's ODA Loan Project, is on going. With setting the slogan as Sustainable Development through Disaster Prevention, the projects consist of the following 4 components: 1) hardware and software system building for sediment disaster prevention, 2) management of gravel mining, 3) multipurpose use of sabo facilities, regional development by irrigation dam reparation, 4) river bed stabilization in the lower Progo River Basin

This time, the field investigations were at Sabo dam construction site at Kuning River (8 Km south from the top of Mt.Merapi), the evacuation building at Kepuhharjo village, Cangkringan, Sleman District in Jogjakarta Special Province (about 9 km south from the top of Mt.Merapi), the pyroclastic flow deposited site of 2006 (4 Km south from the top of Mt.Merapi) and the gravel mining site at Gendol River (7 Km south from the top).
